Friday Update

Can you Guess who received a pie in the face?  Student of the month assemblies at Harrah were all completed this week!  Principal Widener reports, “We had amazing community support and participation in some of the activities we held, such as a relay between parents and students! Staffles were happening all week long during the assemblies!

Samantha Who?  “Samantha Skunk” was presented to the Harrah primary students. Put on for students, by students! The “Samantha Skunk” Program is three different presentations that all use the Samantha Skunk characters and format to present a positive message on health. These stories are designed to be taught primarily at the Pre-K through 2nd grade level. The lesson was taught by our students in brightly colored, full-body costumes, including the title role of Samantha the magenta skunk. Depending on which story is selected, the presentations deal with: Rx & medicine safety, smoking, or lung health & exercise!  Great Job students!

Congratulations Chargers! The Charger wrestling team ended their season yesterday with a potluck style banquet. It was a great turn out with great support from Mt. Adams Middle School parents and guardians! The banquet had a video that was created by our High School media student, Anthony Luton!

It is a New World at Mt. Adams Middle School – Seventh and eighth grade students, For their Dungeons & Dragons exploratory class, collaborated to create their own world. It is this world where they will begin their imagined adventure in their journey as dungeon masters and participants.

What is a Cookie Council?  Board members held a couple of “Cookie Councils" with students this week.  A Cookie Council is when a Board member meets with students to have a conversation about the students’ experience in the District.  The cookie is a little help to make students feel at ease talking with the Board member.  It would be similar to adults meeting over a cup of coffee or a soda.  We look forward to hearing the outcomes of those discussions during our next Board meeting.

The Future of our Special Education Program will be in very capable hands for our upcoming school year.  Ms. Crystal Thompson has agreed to be our new Special Education Program Coordinator.  Crystal has many years of experience in the District, she is our school psychologist, and has been a resource teacher.  She is very well qualified and with over two decades of experience in Special Education, she will help lead the district as we strive to graduate all students from White Swan High School equipped for life.

Ms. Thompson will begin her new duties on July 1, 2024.

Mt. Adams School District featured in OSPI Newsletter - This excerpt is from the McKinney-Vento Office of Student Services:

Mt. Adams School District in Washington is a small rural district with 880 total students, a third of whom are identified as experiencing homelessness under the McKinney-Vento Act. Transportation has emerged as a critical need for the McKinney-Vento program, as district vehicles were often unavailable for supporting the transportation needs of students experiencing homelessness. Dana Jarnecke, Director of Teaching and Learning, partnered with the district's business manager to allocate $35,000 of ARP-HCY funds towards purchasing a vehicle. However, due to low inventory, they were unable to find a vehicle within that budget.

After further discussions with the business manager and obtaining quotes from three sources, they purchased a $75,000 suburban, with ARP-HCY funds covering $35,000 and the district funding the remainder.

Thanks to Dana's direct access with the business manager and clear documentation on the allowable uses of funds from the "Dear Colleague Letter," the business manager recognized both the need and the allowability of this expenditure. The district intends to cover additional costs to maintain the vehicle's use after ARP-HCY funds are no longer available.

Dana Jarnecke, Director of Teaching and Learning, Mt. Adams School District says:

"This is the best thing that's happened to our program. We use the vehicle all the time to transport kids and families for McKinney-Vento related purposes. We also use it for home visits to meet with families about attendance and grades. My recommendation for other districts who want to purchase vehicles is to have a direct connection with your business manager."
