Friday Update from Dr. Guaglianone

Concession Stands are getting a Boost at Harrah - Mount Adams School District received notification from “OSPI Grant Funding Approval” for a new “Merchandiser Refrigerator” to be located in the Harrah Campus’ indoor concession stand.  The value of the grant is $3,573.00 and that will be the first piece of equipment for the indoor snack bar.  The outdoor concession stand will be completed, hopefully by the middle of Spring sports and will be stocked with drinks, popcorn, and maybe even hot dogs, so come hungry and plan to enjoy a great baseball or softball game!

White Swan Student Learning About Construction Careers  - The Yakima Valley Construction Industry Night was held on Feb. 28, 2024.  Students, Parents, and Teachers participated in an exciting event that we believe will greatly benefit our students, region and local communities!  ESD 105 has partnered with Associated General Contractors (AGC), and YV Tech to host this Construction Community Night at the YV Technical Skills Center. The purpose of this event is to provide a platform for local companies to showcase the rewarding careers available in the Construction Industry highlighting the diverse career fields such as IT, Business, Marketing, Health & Safety as well as Skilled Trades.

The Youth Heritage Project will be this Summer - Principal Tenney is working with a select number of White Swan Teachers and students to prepare for an upcoming opportunity for high school aged students this summer. “Youth Heritage Project” is a free overnight program that is hosted by the “Washington Trust for Historic Preservation” in partnership with the National Park Service, the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation, Washington State Parks, and Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve.  Youth Heritage Project is focused on student engagement, activism, and advocacy through place-based activities. This program encourages students to learn about historic preservation, conservation, and community.  Any high school age students may apply online: https://preservewa.org/programs/youth-heritage-project/application/ or they can contact Principal Tenney to be considered for this great opportunity and adventure.

This year’s program will be held July 16-19, 2024 on Whidbey Island, near Coupeville.

A Picture is Worth 1000 Words… Especially in Advertising

Harrah 8th-grade English Language Arts students have been learning to use persuasive writing skills to analyze and create advertisements for products that they came up with from their very own imaginations. Whether you want Marble Make Up, Victoria’s Perfume, or Zesty Juice, our 8th grade students are ready to hit the job market as advertising experts!

Flash Health Curriculum Presented to Parents - On Monday, the Harrah Campus Physical Education Team of teachers, Ricky Ramos and Kortney Marshall, introduced our Flash health curriculum and its main components to parents. There were a few parents who were able to attend and hopefully they learned the overall scope of the curriculum and were able to ask the teachers questions.

Suicide Prevention is One of our Safety Strategies for Students

This past Wednesday, Dr. Julie Schillreff facilitated a QPR training aimed at equipping staff members with knowledge and skills for identifying suicidal cues in young people. QPR stands for “Question, Persuade, and Refer.”  This is a research-based methodology that has proven to save lives.  People may think that if you ask someone if they are suicidal that they will carry out the act.  That is far from the truth, and this QPR training gives teachers the tools necessary to help with this sometimes difficult but life-saving conversation.   QPR training is available to anyone and may be accessed by following this link:  https://qprinstitute.com/

Harrah Campus Celebrates Black History Month

Our school celebrated Black History month all of February by learning about Black Leaders who influenced the country's social movement! Our students learned about the positive contributions that have been made to the United States! This was a time to explore the histories of Black freedom movements—from slavery and abolition to other ongoing struggles for civil and human rights.

No Drugs Allowed on Campus is supported by Yakama Tribal Police.  In a continued effort to make safety a top priority on the Harrah Campus, we partnered with the Yakama Tribal Police to bring in a drug dog to do a sweep of our classrooms.

It was a very positive event that will help establish and nurture a healthy relationship with our local law enforcement while ensuring our school is safe for ALL students, staff, and our community.
